Motor Neurone Disease – Who Does MND Effect?
The effects of MND significantly impacts the person diagnosed with MND and their family and friends, who live with the effect of MND for a lifetime.
For every person diagnosed with MND it is estimated that a further 14 members of their family and their friends will live with the effect of MND forever.
Due to the rapid progression of MND and the spiralling series of neurological loss, MND has a significant impact on the physical and emotional wellbeing of the carer. MND often begins with the weakening of the hand and feet muscles. Damage to Motor Neurone nerve cells causes muscle weaknesses which leads to gradual paralysis, loss of speech, difficulty swallowing and respiratory failure.
The devastating effect of MND on the nerve cells in the spinal cord can be seen below.
